States of Matter

We have spent the last couple of weeks learning about states of matter. Once we learned what solids, liquids, and gasses are, it was time to explore and observe!

We observed what happened to crayons when they spent the day in the crock pot. It was a great example of chemical changes! The kids were really excited that the crayons turned back into crayons when they cooled.

You might have wondered what root beer floats have to do with anything academic :) They are a great example of all three states of matter! The ice cream is a solid (until it melts), the root beer is a liquid, and when they are put together, they create a foam, which is an example of a gas. Apparently we were to busy to stop to take a photo of us making the actual treats, but here are examples of the project we did to go along with them. They wrote about what they observed on the back.

Yesterday we made ice cream! This demonstrates the chemical change of freezing. We had to move around a lot to help the ice cream freeze...and to keep from getting too cold from the ice!

It was really tasty!

Beginning of November Update

We have had such a fun end of October and Beginning of November! We had Red Ribbon Week, so we talked a lot about making strong choices. There were some really fun activities to go along with Red Ribbon Week, as well!

We also closed up nonfiction our units in reading and writing. We had a nonfiction book museum where each student chose a nonfiction book to be an expert on. They were then the "Tour Guides" for their books and explained what they learned to the "Guests" who came around. It was so fun to see how knowledgeable they are about different topics! We also had author's chair to celebrate the nonfiction writing the kids worked so hard on.

Some 2K students celebrating their nonfiction reading success at our Nonfiction Museum!

Playing a game in math to work on addition and subtraction.

Signing the Red Ribbon Week banner to pledge to make strong choices.

We will make strong choices and stand up for others!

We also had an absolutely excellent fall party! A special thanks to all the families who helped out. It was a huge success!

Playing BINGO!

Frosting the GIANT cookies!

Toilet paper mummy game!

We are starting a new social studies unit on Pilgrims, working on reading more fluently, and writing review letters of our reading. It is has been a great start to a new month!

Super September!

I can't believe that September is almost over! It has flown by. We have had some exciting things going on recently.

Last Tuesday was International Dot Day. It is based on a book called The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. This book is all about making your mark on the world and how even the smallest things can make a big difference to others. We spent the day doing dot activities. Here are some pictures of the kids doing dot activities in PE!

Today, we reviewed how to use the iPads with Mrs. Brown. The kids each earned their iPad licenses! We had a lot of fun taking selfies and editing them.
